Pumpkin seeds can be started in traditional plastic trays or peat pots to minimize root damage during transplanting. You can sow pumpkin seeds indoors several weeks before your area’s last frost date. Gardeners living in colder climates can ensure a healthy harvest by starting pumpkin seeds indoors in early spring! Pumpkins require a fairly long growing season to mature on the vine. Plant pumpkin seeds in holes 1 to 1½ inch deep. Once the seedlings emerge, thin the plants to be at least 18 inches apart. When planting pumpkins, rows should be spaced at least 6 feet apart. To grow pumpkins in rows: Sow seeds in holes 6 to 12 inches apart. When the seedlings reach at least 2 inches in height, thin out the pumpkin plants so that there are 2 or 3 left per hill. The hills themselves should be spaced 4 to 8 feet apart. Each hill should contain at least 5 seeds. To grow pumpkins in hills: Create up to 3 holes at least 12 inches apart. Row covers can be used to protect young pumpkin plants from unseasonably cold temperatures, especially at night. A soil temperature of at least 70☏ will improve germination. Pumpkin plants (and their seeds) do not tolerate frost or excessively cold temperatures.Įnsure the soil temperature is above 65☏ before sowing pumpkin seeds in the garden. Temperatureĭon’t be fooled by the pumpkin’s winter squash classification. Loosen the soil directly below each hill (at least 1 foot deep) to improve drainage and root health. The recommended size for pumpkin hills is at least 6 inches tall and 36 inches wide. This technique improves drainage and raises the soil temperature around the pumpkins’ roots. Many gardeners opt to grow pumpkins on small dirt hills. Incorporating compost into your garden bed will also improve overall drainage. Aged compost (or another rich, organic fertilizer) should always be distributed into the soil prior to planting pumpkin seeds.Īlthough pumpkins love moisture, well-draining soil is still a must. Pumpkin plants consume a ton of nutrients in order to support their massive size. A good strategy is to plant pumpkins along the edge of your vegetable patch and direct the vines to grow outward. Standard pumpkin varieties need between 50 and 100 square feet at a minimum. Select a location that receives at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day. Pumpkins need plenty of sun and lots of room to sprawl! These are the two most important factors to consider when choosing a spot to sow pumpkin seeds. Others are grown because they boast interesting shapes, colors, and textures.Īlways ask yourself what you plan to do with your pumpkin harvest and select seeds based on those goals! How To Start Pumpkins From Seed Some varieties are advertised specifically for carving. Of course, pumpkins aren’t just grown for eating. If you want to grow pumpkins for use in the kitchen, opt for a “sugar” or “pie” variety. ![]() However, there are many varieties that are unappetizing at best. You shouldn’t just plant any old pumpkin seeds (unless you don’t care at all what type of pumpkin appears in your garden).Īll pumpkins are technically edible. The one thing you should keep in mind is that most pumpkins take up more space than other squash varieties (and the seeds should be sown accordingly). Semantics aside, there’s little difference in growing a pumpkin from seed versus a squash. Meanwhile, other squash varieties have soft or hollow stems. Pumpkins are loosely defined as winter squash with hard, woody stems. To put it simply, a pumpkin is a type of squash - winter squash, to be exact. This is because all pumpkins are squash but not all squash are pumpkins! “Squash” and “pumpkin” are not interchangeable. If you can meet this need, however, they are remarkably simple to grow. Yes, pumpkin plants require a lot of space. Planting several seeds per hole in your garden will guarantee you don’t waste any time waiting for duds to germinate in the spring.Īs far as how many pumpkin seeds per hole you should plant, most gardeners recommend planting at least 2 per hole. While pumpkins grow quickly, the fruit still takes several months to mature. Have you ever wanted to grow your own pumpkins in time for Halloween festivities or Thanksgiving desserts? Here’s the interesting part…we rarely forget to use those words when speaking to him. So, if we “forget” to say please or thank you, he still loves to remind us. We had taught him the importance of those words and reminded ( hound) him to say them if he has “forgotten.” Well, that lesson was quickly returned to us. Our preschooler helped to shed some light on this for me. We can feel unloved even with a forgotten “please” or “thank you.” It’s as if we assume that they “know” we love them and respect them…so we don’t make it a priority to remind them regularly or to treat them with high regard. However, on a visit to Alhambra in Spain, he became fascinated by the Arabic tessellating patterns contained in the tiles, and started to experiment more with shapes and mirror images. Born in 1898, initially he concentrated on sketching scenery and surrounding objects. This in itself makes a lovely investigation for children.Īnother remarkable man who contributed enormously to the study of tessellation was the Dutch artist M.C.Escher. The two shapes are both parallelograms and the tessellation is often referred to as "Kites and Darts" :Īlthough there are small repeated sections, there is no single unit which can be copied to fill the plane. Amazingly, he managed to reduce this to only six, then just two. Using only pencil and paper, Penrose found such an arrangement but it contained many different shapes. This kind of tessellation became known as quasi-periodic, in other words at first glance there appears to be a repeating pattern, but in fact He began by investigating combinations of shapes which would produce a repeating unit, but this led on to a search for a pattern with no repetition. While studying for his PhD at Cambridge, Penrose became fascinated by the geometry of covering a plane. Octagons and squares can be arranged to form a semi-regular pattern: The image that we are likely to think of is known as a regular tessellation, where all the shapes are regular and of the same type, for example:Ī semi-regular tessellation is made up of two different regular shapes and each vertex (i.e. Traditionally, the pattern formed by a tessellation is repetitive. Two people have principally been responsible for investigating and developing tessellations: Roger Penrose, an eminent mathematician, and the artist, M.C.Escher. Tessellations are a common feature of decorative art and occur in the Presumably this is an indication of the fact that tiles of this shape are the easiest to interlock. The word tessellation itself derives from the Greek tessera, which is associated with four, square and tile. Tessellation is a system of shapes which are fitted together to cover a plane, without any gaps or overlapping. And of course, there is so much maths involved! It seems a golden opportunity to link art with maths, allowing the creative side of your children to take over. There is so much scope for practical exploration of tessellations both For many, this is their preferred method of learning and, in general, it engages pupils more effectively. So often in the classroom we try to make activities more enjoyable for the children by varying our teaching to include a more tactile or "hands on" approach. In the image below, the hexagons are white and the pentagons are black. A soccer ball is covered in hexagons and pentagons, which form a semi-regular tessellation on a sphere. Shapes can be tessellated on surfaces other than the plane, such a spheres. Examples of beautiful tessallations in nature are cracking patterns in dried mud or pottery, cellular structures in Biology and and crystals in metallic ingots.Ī larger example of Penrose tiling, which can repeat infinitely without repetition or symmetry. Tessellations are observed in some works of great artists like M.C. Tessellations are a combination of math, art and fun, in this regard there are numerous applications in real life ranging from the patterns on floors to jig-saw puzzles. The image below is an example of an irregular tessellation. Many other shapes, including ones made up of complex curves can tessellate. Irregular tessellations encompass all other tessellations, including the tiling in the main image. Below are examples of semi-regular tessellations. Semi-regular tessellations, also known as Archimedean tessellations, are formed by two or more regular polygons whose arrangement at every vertex are identical. Regular Hexagons A regular hexagon is a six-sided regular polygon, and it also tessellates. ![]() The cookie is used for security purposes.įunctional cookies help to perform certain functionalities like sharing the content of the website on social media platforms, collect feedbacks, and other third-party features. There were some who doubted my conclusions that the features introduced to reduce falsing, also increased its detection range. Either way, though, it provides the driver with an appearance of increased sensitivity and ultimately that is all that matters. ![]() I have always suspected that this has to do with improved quickness in detection, instead of true detection range improvement. ![]() The potential performance increases were staggering. When the Beltronics STi-R (and the STi-R Plus) are configured to run with Ka-band segmentation it is like running a radar detector on steroids. Escort models did not have this feature as BEL was geared more for the international marketplace.įast forward to the Beltronics STi-R (later becoming the STi-R Plus), their high-end remote, Beltronics incorporated a feature called "Ka band-segmentation." This took the two different Ka detection operations to a whole new plateau as I was the first to discover and write about the alert performance increase when Ka-band segmentation was activated. The standard mode, USA mode, of Ka detection narrowed Ka sweeping coverage and the international mode allowed for extended sweeping in international markets where different frequencies were used. As a consequence, BEL began introducing radar detectors (Pro RX-65) that had two modes of Ka operation-USA and international. Many years ago, Craig Peterson (of RadarTest) suggested to Escort and BEL (now known as Beltronics) to focus its sweep patterns on those three bands instead of the entire Ka-band to reduce falsing. However being so wide, sweeping the band takes time and it also introduces opportunities for false alerting from other radar detectors and transmitting sources that may be detected across the many frequencies encompassed in the entire Ka-band frequency range.ĭespite the "wideness" of Ka, only three specific frequencies are currently used in the U.S. Conventional radar detectors have to continually "sweep" the entire range of Ka frequencies (ie listen for police radar like a scanner does). Unlike other radar bands, X and K, Ka band encompasses a broad spectrum. The STi-R was the first ever radar detector offered with Ka-band segmentation. What does 'expert' mean? For that answer we have to look at another product introduced nearly four years ago from Beltronics, called the Beltronics STi-R remote What makes this a significant release is the incorporation of some new firmware (software)-dubbed as expert software.
